Our Offer

BACKUP Health is a global, operational project in the health sector, implemented by GIZ, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The aim of the global project is to enable partner countries to use the funds provided by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GF) in ways that strengthen their overall health systems and allow for a more sustainable and self-reliant response to HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria (HTM). BACKUP Health has 9 focus countries: Cameroon, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda in Africa and Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in Central Asia. In these countries, BACKUP Health offers advisory services via local project teams, develops catalytic investments in co-creation with its partners and complements the expertise with consultancies where needed.
The project’s activities are closely aligned with the current priorities of the Global Fund. In particular, the programme supports countries to manage an effective transition towards self-reliance and sustainable and resilient health financing; integrate services and systems for HTM into national primary health care (PHC); build capacities for community systems strengthening to ensure marginalised populations continue to engage in the system; as well as to carry out activities around health products for HIV, TB and malaria in Africa. This internship is in support of the HQ-based Country Management Team (CMT) with a focus on health financing, HTM-integration into PHC and community systems strengthening.

Your tasks

As part of the Country Management Team (CMT), you will gain practical experience in global health and international development cooperation.

  • You will support the country operational planning, implementation and documentation (e.g. by supporting documentation of country-level measures; procurement processes; updating of criteria checklists, measure profiles; and providing technical and organisational support as required)
  • You will contribute to the implementation of established cross-country Communities of Practice (CoP) on Health Financing, HTM Integration into PHC, and Community, Rights, Inclusion and Gender (e.g. by actively supporting the preparation of the CoP meetings; developing tailored formats and knowledge-sharing activities; coordinating external technical inputs; conducting technical desk reviews; and supporting the documentation and dissemination of results)
  • You will support communication and knowledge sharing of the CMT in close coordination with the communication and country teams (e.g. by preparing presentations (PPTs) and infographics, drafting and editing communication materials and online content, and translating technical content into clear, accessible and target-group-oriented formats)
  • You will also support other day-to-day team operations and project management (e.g. assisting with meeting preparation, minute-taking, follow-up and coordination of action points)

Your Profile

  • From the fifth semester onwards, you will study public health, health economics/financing, social or political sciences with a health-related focus, or a related field
  • Strong interest in development cooperation, global health and international processes, ideally complemented by international experience, preferably in developing contexts
  • Strong analytical and research skills, including literature reviews and synthesis of complex information
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to communicate technical content in a clear, engaging and target-group-oriented way (incl. creating compelling presentations); initial experience in communications or public relations is an asset
  • Highly organised, proactive and self-directed, with the ability to quickly familiarise yourself with new topics, drive tasks forward independently and collaborate effectively in virtual, largely remote international and multicultural teams
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, including advanced PowerPoint, Excel (including dashboards) and the ability to link and integrate data across applications such as OneNote and Excel
  • Fluent business English; German at C1 level (CEFR) or above. Additional language skills are an advantage
