Intern (m/f/d) in the „International Initiative for the Phase-Out of SF6 in the Power Sector“

SF6 is the most potent known greenhouse gas, yet its emissions have so far received little attention in international climate policy. They originate from gas-insulated switchgear in power infrastructure and are at risk of rising sharply as grids expand in developing and emerging economies. The project therefore supports a new international initiative on SF6 in the power sector. It analyses technologies and financing options and assesses local baseline conditions. Together with the World Bank, it pilots emission reduction measures with grid operators. These include the creation of SF6 inventories, the prevention of leaks, and the introduction of alternative technologies. The project builds a network to mobilise key stakeholders and facilitate knowledge exchange. It advises governments on integrating SF6 into national strategies, improving monitoring, reducing emissions, and phasing out SF6.

As part of a small GIZ-run secretariat for the soon-to-be-launched international initiative, you will support the implementation of the project’s three outputs (Knowledge exchange, network building, country advisory), incl.:

• Support research, analysis and data collection on topics and participants in the SF6 initiative
• Support to the preparation and organisation of the initiative’s working groups and workshops with governments, international institutions, companies, research actors
• Draft and provide input the initiative’s communications, including events/campaigns, factsheets, and website
• Support operational planning, monitoring/evaluation (M&E), and knowledge management of the project

Required criteria:

• Currently enrolled in or recently concluded master-level degree in social, political, economic or environmental sciences, engineering, or similar programme with relevance to the position
• Understanding of the main global challenges and approaches in energy and climate policy
• First practical experience in project, event and knowledge management
• Excellent communication skills, particularly in writing
• High proficiency with Microsoft Office, databases, and AI language models
• Ability to work closely with a project team but also cooperate independently with external partners
• Analytical thinking skills and comfortable with research and knowledge management
• Language: C2 in English, B2 in German

Desirable criteria:

• Knowledge in the areas of power sector infrastructure, non-CO2 greenhouse gases, carbon markets, multi-stakeholder networks
• Experience with development cooperation
• Languages: C2 in German, knowledge of additional UN languages
