Job description

We are looking for a motivated intern with an interest in sustainable transport policy from 06 April 2025, able to work independently, efficiently and in an agile, fast and conscientious manner. Working with data is key for several of our activities.

You will be part of the the "Transport & Climate Change" team which consists of around 30 dedicated colleagues advising partners in countries of the Global South on the further development of national climate protection plans in the transport sector. The geographical focus is on Asia and the African continent. As part of the team, you will be offered interesting insights into the topics of sustainable mobility, climate protection in the transport sector, transparency, financing of infrastructure and energy efficiency in the transport sector.

Your tasks

During your internship you will carry out the following tasks: 

  • Research and technical evaluations, primarily in the areas of transport and climate, urban mobility, digitalisation and open data as well as energy efficiency and vehicle efficiency standards
  • Providing input and support for specialist consulting services on international climate and transport policy issues
  • Supporting the Transport Data Commons Initiative (https://tdc.unece.org) in stakeholder management and in the further development of a database prototype
  • Analysis of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in transport to achieve the Paris climate targets in cooperation with partner organisations for the "Tracker for Climate Strategies in Transport" (www.changing-transport.org/tracker) and its further development (text mining)
  • Collaboration in the development of a standard product for MRV (Measurement, Reporting, Valuation) of climate protection contributions in the transport sector
  • Preparing and supporting the organisation of various events; preparing presentations, agendas and invitations; preparing the content of events in partner countries
  • Independent creation of short technical articles for external communication (e. g. website, blogs, social media)
  • Supporting the project team with administrative tasks

Your profile

  • Completed or ongoing studies (undergraduate or bachelor's degree preferred) in the field of transport science (transport planning, transport engineering, transport geography), economics, environmental/climate science, political science/international relations (focus on climate policy), geography, urban/spatial planning, or a related field
  • You also have an interest in development policy and a basic understanding of the challenges in the transport sector in emerging and developing countries, and/or knowledge of international climate policy and approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.
  • You have a very good command of written and spoken English and one additional language (German and/ or French would be an advantage). You have a good feel for language and are adept at writing and editing texts.
  • You are analytical and structured in your approach to new tasks and challenges.
  • You have organisational skills and are happy to assist with the preparation of events and maintaining contact with project partners.
  • You are familiar with the common Office programmes (especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
  • You are no stranger to working with data and handling extensive Excel spreadsheets.
